MyWi iPhone Tethering on Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx

First off, Ubuntu 10.04 is amazingly nice! This is my 6 time trying to migrate over to Linux and this time, I am staying for sure. That is a later blog post for sure. But for now, it's very important for me to have access to the internet no matter where I am in the world.

Now, not that I would ever tether my iPhone. But if I did, and if I had Ubuntu 10.04 as my main OS. This is how you would go about doing it. BTW: Ubuntu forms are great!

To get it going, make sure your iPhone is not plugged in.

Open up terminal and Add the repo:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:pmcenery/ppa

Next, update:
sudo apt-get update

Now time to install:
sudo apt-get install libimobiledevice-dev libimobiledevice-utils ipheth-utils gvfs

After this is done, turn the app MyWi on, and plug it in. It will not seem to work if you have it plugged in, and then turn it on.

Now, you are ready to tether you iPhone. BTW, if it your phone gets really hot while doing this, I would place it on a metal table or anything metal you can find to act as a heat sync. Thats if I used an application like MyWi: http://www.rockyourphone.com/index.php/mywi.html?feat=y

Forum post: (be careful and read all the posts before installing, the code above should be the correct way to get it done) http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1474182&page=2

Hope that helps someone out there that needs to have internet all the time like me.
